October Small Business Month Events in the Highlands
Small Business Month Events are happening throughout October in the Southern Highlands. If you are a small business owner, then best you check out the following key events which will focus on economic recovery for our local region. Thanks goes to the Southern Highlands Key Stakeholders Group who have been instrumental in organising these must-attend events.

Southern Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Wingecarribee Shire Council are pleased to present the Small Business Commissioner Chris Lamont, as Keynote Speaker, as we launch a significant program of local events in support of small businesses in the Southern Highlands. Connecting with each other is an important part of re-booting oneself, the business and the local economy. We are looking forward to facilitating networking after a long period of time where face-to-face events have been restricted. Our thanks to Mittagong RSL for hosting this COVID safe event.

This exciting event includes a line-up of Agribusiness & Equine industry innovators who will inspire ‘Women In Agribusiness’ to ‘futureproof you’ and your business, especially relevant in a post Covid economy. Moss Vale & Rural Chamber of Commerce is hosting this action packed event featuring Keynote Speaker Dr Patrice Newell author of “Who’s Minding The Farm? In this climate emergency”. Patrice will talk about the benefits of embracing innovation and sustainability to improve agricultural systems.
Attendees and online viewers will learn more methods of how to build resilience from other special guests including Samantha Hayes – Mirrool Creek Lamb, creating a lamb brand and getting the product to market, and Katrina Hill – Far Ago Hill, creating a quality wine tasting Agritourism experience, who will each present a case study.
All three speakers will participate in the Q&A panel discussion in Session 2 hosted by Suzannah Cowley and be joined by Janie Forest - Coolawarra Alpacas, Councilor, Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, successful exhibitor nationally, specialised in research & development of Alpaca fleece for emerging commercial production, Brigid Kennedy – The Loch, thoroughbred breeder, and Lizzie Buscaino – Piccolo Farm, organic vegetable and edible flower grower. During Session 1 Carli Phillips wellbeing guru and Katrina Sparke of Redleaf Farm, a small-scale sustainable mixed family farm, hosted by Catherine Shields will provide tips and advice on health and wellbeing, in particular mental health, and how to build personal resilience.
In terms of farmers diversifying into Agritourism to supplement their income, Wingecarribee Shire Council will explain what opportunities exist under their Rural Tourism Policy, and should you start an Agritourism business Destination NSW will explain how you can promote the experiences you offer. TAFE NSW will provide an overview of what agriculture and equine and general business qualifications and skills training is available. Service NSW will explain what services are on offer to assist farmers and Agritourism operators. A Business Connect advisor, available through Southern Region Business Enterprise Centre, will explain how to access free business advisor programs such as Entrepreneurship Facilitators, Business Connect and ASBAS Digital, and how they can assist you.

Farmers and food lovers welcome to the third annual Southern Highlands Growers & Producers Long Lunch, celebrating the incredible diversity and quality of local produce. Regional Development Australia Southern Inland has consistently supported this event enabling food lovers to meet local growers, producers, wine makers, brewers, chefs, and cafe and restaurant owners and experience a menu using entirely local ingredients. Moss Vale & Rural Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Southern Highlands Food & Wine Association are proud to announce that this year’s local chefs designing the menu, based on available fresh produce, are Brigid Kennedy and Nathan West. Indulge in three sumptuous courses and local wine and beer is included.
Guests will be inspired by special guest Peter Andrews, regenerative farming guru, author of "Back from the Brink" and "Beyond the Brink", and has appeared on Australian Story. Peter will be interviewed by Rob Skinner of WinZero and will share his story and vision for regenerative farming.
