Planning An Intimate Wedding In The Highlands
How To Create The Perfect (Smaller) Celebration In The Southern Highlands
Now, we don’t want to mention the C-word here because this article is all about celebrating LOVE! But what we will say is that pesky global pandemic has meant there have been restrictions put on the number of people allowed at a wedding and what you can and can’t do.
But instead of getting all Bridezilla on COVID’s arse, lots of couples have taken the opportunity to scale their wedding celebrations down and create a beautiful, intimate celebration of their love in the Southern Highlands.
So, if you’re in the same (love) boat and looking to tie the knot in front of your nearest and dearest, here’s where to start.
1 // The rules and regs
This is totally unromantic, but you have to toe the line in regard to what NSW Health have stipulated is okay. Keep up to date with the wedding rules and regs from NSW Health here.
The good news is we can all sing and dance at weddings again - yippee! We just have to make sure we're keeping socially distant (except for the bride and groom, of course!).

2 // Venues
The Highlands is blessed with an awesome array of wedding venues to choose from. From beautiful wineries to country pubs, stylish hotels, unique restaurants, rustic barns and farms, there really is so much on offer here.
Links House in Burradoo is a fab venue for a smaller wedding. They can cater up to 120 people across different spaces on the property, with some fabulous outdoor spaces – think lush, green lawns and beautiful old trees – very Highlands!
We love the outdoor space at The Mill Bowral too. A funky, industrial style space with lots of character - a great canvas to work with to style up beautifully.
Birch Restaurant in Moss Vale is another local favourite that can host a small gathering of your nearest and dearest – have a cocktail reception in the courtyard or a sit-down meal in the restaurant (or both!). Get in touch with the team to talk stunning menus, gobsmacking styling and the all-important bevvie selection.
Eschalot in Berrima is a top spot for a gorgeous, intimate celebration. There's a private room for 20 people, or book out the whole restaurant for a max of 50 guests. Oh, and they have a cracking fairy lit courtyard where the guys can put on an Argentinian BBQ – so unique (and of course, the food is seriously next level!).
Or for something charming and easy to get to thanks to it's location in the centre of Mittagong, head to the Old Bank Boutique Hotel where you can book out the beautiful dining room for weddings of up to 35-40 people. A gorgeous location by the open fire for a quiet, winter wedding.

3 // Caterers
If you’re going to celebrate at home, in a village hall or on a private property somewhere in the Highlands, then you’re going to need a fabulous caterer. Lucky for us locals, we have plenty of talented catering companies – here’s a list to get you started.
We love love love the delicious creations that Bec from Black Hen Kitchen conjures up, inspired by her Mediterranean heritage. She specialises in small gatherings and could do the cake for you too (get ready to drool!).
Grazing platters are totally a thing right now and Nadia from Highlands Grazing Co creates amazing platters and set-ups that are not only super Insta-worthy but totally delicious too!
If you fancy creating your own special smorgasbord for a small group, head into Birch Store in Mossy to stock up on breads, cheeses, deli items, condiments, chutneys, sweet treats and more.
Going super casual and lowkey with some delicious, barbecued meat and fresh salads? Click here for a list of local butchers and we suggest you head into Bendooley Estate Larder on Bong Bong Street to load up on a huge range of amazing, fresh and fabulous salads.
Or book a food truck. The team behind A Van Called Delilah have taken burgers to the next level with their pulled pork buns and haloumi buns. Who says you can't have burgers at a wedding?? Not us!! We'd have them for brekkie too if we could. Oh, and they make brioche doughnuts....mmmmmm....doughnuts.

4 // Flowers and styling
A smaller wedding means you can push the boat out a little bit more with the budget and create something super special from a styling perspective. This list of local florists can help you create something super gorgeous.
And if you enjoy styling things up yourself, head to the local flower farms and grab a few buckets of freshly cut blooms, source some gorgeous vases or table centrepieces from these local homewares stores, roll your sleeves up and voila – gorgeous tablescapes created by you. It’s so much easier to DIY when numbers are smaller, right?
5 // Cake
Our favourite part!! We could have cake for entrée, main and dessert, and then some with coffee....and then some for brekkie, the next day. Big fans of a fancy wedding celebration cake, can you tell??
There are plenty of local bakers that could create your dream cake for you. There’s Roxi from The Batty Baker who specialises in special occasion cakes and is awesome to work with if there are dietary requirements to deal with (and she had us at swiss meringue buttercream). And Potter’s Pantry have been rustling up super unique and super popular celebration cakes in Bundanoon that are to die for!
And we mentioned Black Hen Kitchen before – Bec's cakes look and taste amazing. See?
