7 Fab Picnic Spots in the Southern Highlands
Summer is just around the corner – the perfect time to pack a basket full of goodies (hello chicken sangers and mini quiches!) and head out to enjoy some of the beautiful parks and reserves dotted across the fabulous Highlands.
Looking for a fun day out with the kids? Or some romantic time out? Or need somewhere to bring the extended fam bam together for a celebration?
Here’s a list of some fab spots to roll out the picnic rug.
LAKE ALEXANDRA RESERVE // Alfred Street, Mittagong
Tucked in behind Mittagong just off the Old Hume Highway is this well-equipped and well known picnic spot.
Lake Alexandra Reserve has play equipment for the kids, shaded areas and gazebos along with toilets, picnic tables and BBQs.
Popular with all ages, this is the perfect spot for a big family celebration with ample tables and space to accommodate big groups.
THE FOLD LOVES // checking out all the walking tracks that run around the reserve.
CECIL HOSKINS NATURE RESERVE // Moss Vale Road, Moss Vale
This National Parks run picnic area is nestled on the banks of the Wingecarribee River overlooking gorgeous wetlands teeming with birdlife. Accessed from Moss Vale Road (turn left about a kilometre after Briars if you’re coming from the north into the Cecil Hoskins Access Road).
Let’s say this one is for those who don’t mind getting back to nature! There are drop-toilets and only a couple of tables but it is absolutely free! (yep - the regular NSW National Park fees don’t apply – cool!)
Take a stroll along the Weir View Walking Track which is an easy one kilometre return walk to the picnic area, and soak up the serenity. This is a place a lot of us drive past nearly every day, not even realising it’s there!
THE FOLD LOVES // watching the waterbirds in the wetlands from the viewing platform.
FITZROY RESERVOIR // Nowra Road, Fitzroy Falls
The recreation area at Fitzroy Reservoir has so much to offer! Picnic tables and shelters, toilets, BBQs, a playground and even drinking water. Just a few kilometres past the Fitzroy Falls Visitors Centre, it’s a great spot to spend an afternoon.
Entry is free and it’s open 24 hours. There are restrictions on some activities to protect the water supply, so no swimming or watercraft activities are permitted. And that goes for furry family members too.
THE FOLD LOVES // Taking the rods out to the fishing area and throwing in a line!
MOUNT GIBRALTAR RESERVE // Oxley Drive, Mittagong
Overlooking beautiful Bowral, perched up high on top of Mount Gibraltar is a beautiful rustic little picnic area called the Inner Bowl Picnic Ground.
Equipped with tables, sheltered area and toilets, this is a wonderful little haven hidden amongst the towering gums.
Take the walking track from the picnic area around the summit of Mount Gibraltar (it’s all paved and perfect for a leisurely stroll) and check out the Bowral, Jellore and Mittagong lookouts.
THE FOLD LOVES // reading about the local history on the signboards dotted around the area and the view from the Bowral Lookout - check it out!!
BERRIMA MARKET PLACE // Old Hume Highway, Berrima
This spacious park in the centre of Berrima is popular with large family groups out to celebrate a day in the sunshine. There is plenty of space to spread out and you don't have to worry about cramping anyone else’s style.
It’s well equipped with toilets, tables, BBQs and even a massive playground for the kids which absolutely keeps them occupied! You can stay for hours without any tantrums from kids or adults alike. Sounds like picnic paradise!
THE FOLD LOVES // the flying fox for the kids.
LEIGHTON GARDENS // Argyle Street, Moss Vale
Smack bang in the middle of Mossy is this gorgeous green oasis. Perfect for stretching out in the sunshine on lush grass.
There’s a beautiful gazebo for those who don’t wish to risk the grass stains and would prefer the comfort of the picnic table. And all the fabulous stores on Argyle Street are a hop, skip and jump away. Picnic + shopping = yay!
THE FOLD LOVES // Grabbing a milkshake from the nearby cafes to enjoy in the beautiful sunshine.
GOANNA FALLS RESERVE // Greenhills Road, Berrima
A little more rustic than most, this little gem is tucked in behind the highway down Greenhills Road but you honestly wouldn’t even know it.
The stream that flowed through the reserve is currently dried up but there is still water and plenty of wildlife at the bottom of the reserve for those who venture a little further down from the well-kept grassy knoll.
A brand new picnic table takes place pride of place in the middle of the reserve and is the only luxury at this picnic spot. But for those who are looking for a quick (and quiet) little stop over this is a perfect little sanctuary.
THE FOLD LOVES // The wild rustic charm of this little reserve and that there’s plenty of room to kick a ball around!
