As well as learning sound basic techniques of kicking, hand strikes, blocks and stances, this is a fun, energetic class that involves extensive partner work to develop superior stand-up fighting skills. Free sparring focuses on stand-up fighting (footwork, blocks & striking). This class is aimed at those who want to attain good general fitness levels and competent martial art and self-defence techniques. It is suitable for most individuals.
Dragons classes are designed with the younger student in mind. As well as having some fun during classes (by way of various physical activities and games), it also actively teaches them self-defence, fitness, discipline, focus, confidence, respect and the rewards which come from effort.
Kung Fu Defence
A comprehensive and balanced system that progresses through all aspects of martial arts training utilizing internal training principles. Through stances, kicks, hand strikes and blocks, training drills, forms and weapons training, students learn the underlying principles of Tai Chi Chuan, Mian Chuan and Wing Chun Kung Fu, and how best to apply them in different self-defence situations.
Mian Chuan is a unique martial arts system that teaches and promotes the use of internal energy which when properly cultivated is unlimited. Yang Mian practitioners are taught explosive power, steel hand and steel body. This is internal system Chinese martial arts.
Tai Chi - Chi Kung
A gentle class, ideal for those who want to reduce stress and improve their general health. Tai Chi and Chi Kung involves the coordination of the breath with various physical postures and motions of the body for health, balance, energy and general well-being.
Learn the traditional form of Korean Karate; Taekwondo, the worlds most popular martial art form which incorporates combat techniques using hands and feet. Ta Mo Tao Kung Fu
Kung Fu is a complete Martial Art incorporating stand up fighting techniques with throws, locks, holds and weapons. It is taught as self-defence within a framework of core values of ‘respect for life’ and ‘respect for oneself’. Tai Chi Chuan
Tai Chi Chuan will build a strong body and develop real power but is also for self cultivation. In practice it is a philosophy (Yin/Yang). You must know how to be soft to neutralize the enemy, but you must also know how to be hard to attack the enemy. Learn more here.
Mian Chuan or Continuous Fist is so called because its movements are continuous and combine flexible, soft and supple actions with hard, powerful actions; following and sticking to the opponent, one strike giving rise to the next. It is radically different from other Chinese traditional styles because it has no patterns or weapons training. Learn more here.
Stephen Atkinson is the Head Instructor of Ta Mo Tao Martial Arts and is presently ranked as 5th degree Black Belt in both Kung Fu and Taekwondo. He began his training in 1974 in the art of Judo. This was followed in 1978 with Taekwondo and in 1984 began Chinese martial arts in the form of Tai Chi Chuan and Wing Chun. He has continually sought out the best of all martial arts and has trained with many great masters such as Chen Xiao Wang, Chong Chul Rhee, Chong Yoon Rhee, Peter Yu, Howard Choy, Erle Montaigue, Susanna Ho and Yang Zhen Hua. He began his teaching career in Martial Arts in 1988. Ta Mo Tao Martial Arts was established in 2000 and moved into its full-time training centre in Mittagong in 2006.
